About Mr David Rew

General Introduction

David Rew was educated in Wales, at Christ College, Brecon; at The University of Cambridge (Pembroke College) and as a medical undergraduate at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill, SE London.


He undertook his basic and higher postgraduate training in teaching and general hospitals in London, including KCH, St James Hospital Balham, St Georges Hospital Tooting, Northwick Park Hospital and Whipps Cross Hospital; and in hospitals inWessex, including Southampton University Hospitals, Poole, Portsmouth and Winchester hospitals.


From 1994 to 1999, he moved to Leicester as Senior Lecturer in Surgery and Honorary Consultant Surgeon.
He was invited to return to Southampton in 1999 as Consultant General Surgeon to Southampton University Hospitals and as Honorary Senior Lecturer in Surgery to the University of Southampton.


Since 1994 he has also been one of a small national group of consultant surgeons selected by the Defence Medical Services to apply their specialist training and background to the care of service personnel "on the front line" for whom he has served in the Gulf (1991, 2003) and Afghanistan (2008).  


David Rew is a senior, experienced and broadly trained surgeon who makes full use of the range of his professional, technical, clinical and managerial skills in public and academic service for the NHS and the Crown, and at national level for various professional surgical bodies;  and international level representing UK Surgery as the Editor in Chief of the EJSO, the Journal for Cancer Surgery.


In clinical practice in Southampton, he has provided since 1999 a general surgical service for a wide range of conditions, including hernias, gall bladder problems, gastrointestinal disorders, soft tissue "lumps and bumps", including tumours and lymphomas.


In his local and regional specialist practice, he supports:



  • The Southampton, Salisbury and Isle of Wight inpatient and outpatient Breast Service for the diagnosis and care of patients with Breast cancer and Benign Disorders

  • The Southampton and Salisbury Breast Screening Service
    - The Southampton Endocrine Service for the management of adults and children with thyroid and parathyroid conditions

  • The New Forest Primary Care Trust, Lymington and Hythe Hospital

  • The Southampton NHS Treatment Centre at the Royal South Hants Hospital, where he undertakes a range of general surgical procedures, including hernia repairs, abdominoplasties, soft tissue and gall bladder surgery.

  • The work of the Defence Medical Services in the training and operational deployment of health professionals to zones of conflict


He also has an independent (private) clinical practice which reflects his NHS workload, and a national medicolegal practice providing independent specialist reports to NHS trusts and solicitors.
